The UK will no longer allow the sale of wet wipes made of plastic.

Environment Secretary Steve Barclay is set to propose legislation banning the sale of wet wipes containing plastic in the UK today.

The government intends to introduce the legislation before parliament begins its summer break in July.
Selling wet wipes with plastic will be prohibited in England under the new rule, which will go into effect for the rest of the UK in the fall.

Wet wipes that are disposed of improperly regularly end up as litter on British beaches and eventually degrade into microplastics that contaminate water and harm ecosystems.

A number of businesses have already taken action to remove them from their shelves, including Tesco, Aldi, and Boots.

The prohibition “builds on a raft of actions already taken to protect our waterways and hold,” according to Mr. Barclay.
