Maryam Nawaz has changed her lifestyle significantly since becoming chief minister, according to Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari, who stated on Wednesday that she now wears “normal clothes” and values “simplicity”.
“Maryam [Nawaz] wears normal clothes [whereas] her other clothes are old and date before the [February 8] general elections,” the provincial government spokeswoman stated during an appearance on the “Geo Pakistan” segment of Geo News.
The minister’s words were made at a time when Maryam, who created history in February by becoming the first-ever female chief minister of Punjab, has demonstrated that she is a proactive provincial chief executive. This has possibly put her in a greater spotlight than her position as senior vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Relentlessly confronted by political rivals’ criticism, social media users have accused Maryam of dressing in ostentatious, high-end clothing.
Bukhari addressed the accusations by stating that CM Punjab prefers and typically wears plain clothing.
“I didn’t say she doesn’t wear branded clothes, she prefers simple clothes now,” said the minister.
Bukhari bemoaned the needless attention, but emphasized that CM Maryam doesn’t require anyone’s approval for her wardrobe choices.
