In 2023, there were 321,582 cases globally, representing an 88% rise from the 171,153 instances that were reported in the year prior.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the total number of cases for 2024 appears to be on course to at least equal the figures from previous year.
At the Global Congress in Barcelona on Saturday, Dr. Patrick O’Connor of the WHO issued a warning, saying that certain nations may now lose their “elimination status” when it is evaluated in September.
The WHO deemed the UK to be measles-free in 2017, but following a spike in cases, this designation was revoked in 2019.
COVID-19 containment measures stopped the spread of the measles, and the UK regained its status as an elimination country in 2021.
