Despite Humza Yousaf’s announcement earlier this week that he intended to resign as SNP leader and first minister, Scottish Labour proceeded with their motion.
It was defeated by 58 to 70 votes.
The motion was opposed by the Scottish Greens, who saw it as “chaos for the sake of chaos” according to co-leader Patrick Harvie.
All of the ministers in the minority SNP administration would have been obliged to resign if it had passed.
While wishing Mr. Yousaf well and thanking him for his service, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar opened the debate by stating that Scotland was “crying out for change” from both the SNP Scottish administration and the UK Conservative government.
