When demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war reached a breaking point early on Wednesday, police were called to Columbia University in New York and also broke up protests at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Over 300 people were detained at Columbia and the neighboring City College, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Protesters took over Columbia’s Hamilton Hall, and Mayor Adams stated that the gathering was “led by individuals who were not affiliated with the university”.
“There is a movement to radicalize young people,” he stated. And I won’t wait for it to be finished before acknowledging its presence.
