On Thursday, the soccer team made history by signing 14-year-old phenom Cavan Sullivan.
The agreement is thought to be the biggest homegrown contract in league history, despite the terms not being disclosed to the public.
On the league website, it states that “if a player has fulfilled the requirements and has been a part of the club’s youth academy for a minimum of one year, the club may sign him to a contract without having him go through the MLS SuperDraft.” MLS players that join via this method are referred to as “homegrown players.”
The agreement gives the Union the opportunity to develop Sullivan further and take advantage of his skills in the near future before making money when he probably moves abroad.
