Prior to the general elections, Makhdoom Basit Sultan Bukhari, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), had his supporters swear allegiance to him on the basis of the Holy Quran.
Bukhari was shown sitting with his fans in a video that has now gone viral on social media, when they vowed devotion to him.
Bukhari is a candidate from two federal constituencies in Muzaffargarh, NA-176 and NA-177, and two provincial constituencies, PP-272 and PP-273. Bukhari left the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and joined the party led by Shehbaz Sharif.
The leader of the PML-N said that his rivals were spreading false information about his political prowess, leading his followers to swear that the “evil” people circulating negative information about them were untrue.
He went on to say that the goal of the oath was to effectively counter the opponents’ misinformation.
General elections in Pakistan are scheduled for February 8 of next year, with major political parties hoping to form a center-left administration.
