The News said on Monday that Syed Ali Kasim Gilani, the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate in the NA-148 Multan-I by-election, defeated Barrister Taimur Altaf Mahay, the candidate for the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), by a significant margin.

By-elections were conducted to fill the vacancy left by Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani’s departure.

In the pivotal Multan fight, where Mahay lost by 35,572 votes in the by-elections held on Sunday, the PPP lawmaker received 89,097 votes, while the SIC candidate received 53,572 votes, according to unofficial and unverified figures.

The entire polling procedure took place in a calm setting with well-thought-out security protocols. Even though 69 polling places were deemed “sensitive” by the police, no untoward occurrence was reported.
