BMW, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and Volkswagen (VW) utilized parts manufactured by a supplier on a list of companies banned for potential links to Chinese forced labour, according to a US Senate study.
According to a report by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden’s staff, at least 8,000 BMW Mini Coopers were smuggled into the United States with components from the prohibited Chinese firm Sichuan Jingweida Technology Group.
“Automakers’ self-policing is clearly not doing the job,” the Democratic Senator stated.
Jaguar Land Rover stated to the news that company “takes human rights and forced labour issues seriously and has an active ongoing programme of human rights protection and anti-slavery measures” .
BMW and Volkswagen did not immediately reply to calls for comment.
