The Punjab Joint Action Committee (JAC) decided to file a lawsuit against the laws passed by the Punjab Assembly in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday, rejecting the Defamation Bill 2024 as a “black law.”
The controversial bill was approved by the provincial legislature on Monday, despite a vocal opposition. The law, which the Treasury benches claim is “draconian” in the eyes of the media, aims to combat fake news.
In a statement released today, the Punjab JAC expressed opposition to the bill, stating that it was determined at an urgent virtual meeting that it will continue to fight the Defamation Bill 2024 by reaching out to political parties, human rights organizations, and other relevant parties.
Members of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) were present during the meeting.
