In his inaugural speech of the election campaign, the leader of the Labour Party referred to the Tory proposal, which would have required 18-year-olds to spend a year in the military or perform mandatory volunteer work, as “desperate”.
“This constant spinning represents the disorder and unpredictability,” he remarked.
“Over the past several days, you’ve witnessed it once more: the desperation behind this National Service policy, which is akin to an adolescent Dad’s Army and is funded—I’m not kidding—by cutting funding for leveling up and by taking money from tax evasion that could have been used to fund NHS investments.
It appears to me that they are searching through the toy box for a plan to put out there. It won’t work, in my opinion.
According to Sir Keir, the Conservatives’ intention to withdraw funds from the leveling-up fund indicates that they have given up on the project they presented to voters in 2019.
