After the Israeli airstrike, millions of people shared the image “All eyes on Rafah” on social media.

It's a photograph that you have probably seen on Instagram: neat rows of tents extending into the distance on dusty terrain, with white structures forming the words "All eyes on Rafah" in the middle.

A call to action on Instagram to share the picture also counts the amount of users who have added it to their stories—as of Wednesday morning, over 37 million—to their account.

Palestinian doctors report that an Israeli bombardment on an area housing displaced Palestinians in the southern Gazan city of Rafah on Sunday set their tents on fire.

At least forty-five people were killed, and the news verified an image that showed several bodies being pulled from the debris of destroyed buildings. In a particular video, a man is seen holding.

The strike was described as a “tragic mistake” by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman stated that a fire that followed was largely to blame for the destruction, rather than the munitions themselves.

The image “definitely looks” like artificial intelligence (AI), according to Marc Owen Jones, a specialist on disinformation and associate professor of Middle East studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar, who spoke with News.

Not only does the image lack realism, but it also has strange shadows and an oddly symmetrical tent camp—a common evidence of pattern recurrence in AI generation—all of which are indications that the image was created using artificial intelligence.

Even after a picture has gone viral, social media warnings about sensitive content frequently cover up images and videos of attacks and their aftermath.
