Tens of thousands of Dortmund supporters had reenacted the Yellow Wall in Berlin’s Olympiastadion, under a massive banner that bore the last words of a well-known terrace chant: “Werdet uns’re Helden!” – become our heroes!
Edin Terzic, a semi-professional striker, was the 29-year-old assistant coach of Dortmund’s Under-17 team, and he was standing beneath the flag with a black and yellow scarf around his neck.
Nine years later, as Borussia Dortmund’s acting coach, Terzic would win the German Cup himself at the conclusion of the pandemic-plagued 2020–21 season.
He will captain his childhood team against Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday at Wembley, with the goal of fulfilling the words on that banner in Berlin and becoming a true Dortmund hero by winning the biggest award.
The last time they were here was during the 2013 championship game, when Arjen Robben’s goal in the 89th minute sent Klopp’s Dortmund down 2-1 to Bayern Munich.
On the last day of the Bundesliga season, Terzic told Sport, “Last time, I went to London the day before to try and soak up the atmosphere before supporting the team from the stands.” “But those days are over.”
