Emma Raducanu exits the Auckland Classic with three-set defeat by Elina Svitolina

After losing to second seed Elina Svitolina 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 in the second round of the Auckland Classic, Emma Raducanu is eliminated. Playing in her second match following surgery on her ankle and wrist, the British player jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening set and eventually won the tie-break. After a second tiebreak, Svitolina won the match, and in just thirty-one minutes, Raducanu was fatigued, and Svitolina won the third. Raducanu’s next assignment is the Australian Open, which starts on January 14. The world number 25 Svitolina faced off against the 2021 US Open winner, who was wearing somewhat heavy strapping on her right thigh, until the match ended in a fade following two grueling sets that lasted over an hour apiece.
