The 52-year-old Assange was accused of plotting to acquire and reveal information related to national defense.
The US has maintained for years that lives were in risk as a result of the WikiLeaks files, which leaked details about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
For the past five years, Assange has been detained in a British prison and has been fighting extradition to the United States.
The news reports that Assange will not be held in US custody and will be compensated for his time spent behind bars in the UK.
Assange is going back to Australia, the Department of Justice said in a letter.
Wikileaks announced on X, the former Twitter site, that Assange had been out of Belmarsh prison on Monday after spending 1,901 days in a cramped cell.
The statement further stated that he was “released at Stansted airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK” on his way back to Australia.
According to footage that Wikileaks posted online, Assange is seen being taken to Stansted and getting on a plane while wearing jeans and a blue shirt.
Stella Assange, his wife, thanked his followers on Twitter, saying, “They have all mobilized for years and years to make this come true.”
The founder of WikiLeaks was released from prison after five years.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has reportedly left the UK following a protracted legal battle in which he agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges in exchange for his release from prison.
