Senedd member Russell George, a Welsh Conservative, withdrew from the shadow cabinet when it became known that the Gambling Commission was looking into him for possible bets on when the vote would take place.
The head of the Welsh Conservative Party, Andrew RT Davies, declared that he would “cooperate fully” with the investigation and that every other member of the Welsh Conservative Group has “confirmed that they have not placed any bets.”
As part of the commission’s probe, Mr. George is the third Conservative candidate to be named; the other five cops, the close protection officer for Rishi Sunak, and two Tory officials.
Alister Jack, the Scotland Secretary, acknowledged placing three bets on the poll’s timing but insisted he was not being investigated or in violation of any laws.
The Gambling Commission is looking into up to 15 Conservative candidates and officials, News has learned.
Politicians should not be allowed to wager on politics, just as football players are not allowed to wager on sports, according to concerns raised by the scandal’s expanding extent.
