The former mobster is now the minister of sports in South Africa.

Gayton McKenzie was formerly a bank robber and thug before becoming a nightclub owner and opposition politician. He is currently South Africa's minister of sports, arts, and culture.

Following the loss of his African National Congress (ANC) legislative majority in the May 29 election, President Cyril Rampahosa announced on Sunday the appointment of Mr. McKenzie, the head of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), to a portfolio in the multi-party administration.
For those who admire Mr. McKenzie, this position is just one more example of how he overcome hardship to succeed. Before being sixteen, he robbed his first bank. Later, he developed into a fully-fledged gangster, as he revealed in an interview with a local radio station. He served seven years in prison before making the commitment to turn his life around.

Even though I just had 12 rand in my pocket, my head was filled with billions of rand. In a 2013 interview with national broadcaster , he stated, “And that is what people do not understand – they concentrate on what they lack instead of how to get what they lack.”
Along with his jail buddy Kenny Kunene, he delved into a variety of companies, including mining in Zimbabwe and nightclubs in South Africa, and became a highly paid motivational speaker. He also had books about his life published, including A Hustler’s Bible.

Mr. Kunene gained the moniker “Sushi King” when, at his 40th birthday celebration at the upscale Zar Lounge nightclub in an affluent Johannesburg suburb, he had sushi served on the bodies of women only wearing their underwear.
