ISLAMABAD Former leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Miftah Ismail, put an end to months of rumors about the creation of a new political party when they announced the launch of “Awam Pakistan,” promising to alter the nation’s political landscape and refuse to give “tainted” politicians any room to operate.
At the news conference in Islamabad, accompanied by Miftah and former PML-N leader Mehtab Abbasi, Khaqan, who was prime minister during the PML-N’s 2013–18 term in power, declared, “Politicians with tainted reputations won’t be a part of Awam Pakistan.”
The party was officially launched some months after Khaqan and Ismail left the ruling party due to disagreements with the leadership.
Speculation of a new political platform arose after Khaqan addressed Pakistan’s Election Commission in April.
The former prime minister criticized the current administration in a tough news conference today, claiming that those who won on the basis of “Form-47″—a reference to the purported manipulation of the election results—could not build the nation.
