ISLAMABAD Islamabad Police said on Thursday that they will be monitoring social media throughout Muharram, especially WhatsApp groups, to identify and take action against hatemongers as Ashura day approaches.

For the same reason, the federal capital police have set up a dedicated social media squad, whose job it is to keep an eye on hate speech on WhatsApp groups and other social media sites.

The media cell will operate under the direction of AIG Operations, according to a police official.

In the first month of Islam, the official threatened to take legal action against anyone who shared hateful content. The spokeswoman stated, “Cases will be lodged in the cyber crime cell against such persons.”

The date of Ashura is the 10th of Muharram, the day of Imam Hussain’s (RA) martyrdom.

During Muharram, believers conduct majalis and processions throughout the nation, and hundreds of law enforcement officers are stationed to provide tight security while religious leaders speak to sizable crowds.

In the nation, Muharram began on July 8 following the sighting of the lunar month’s crescent.

The provincial governments had previously requested that six social media platforms be suspended for roughly a week during Muharram in order to stop the propagation of hate speech online. Nevertheless, the federal government has not yet made a decision in this regard.

As part of security measures, the Sindh government on July 6 banned 143 ulema and zakireen for a period of 60 days.
