ISLAMABAD Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi received a great deal of relief on Saturday when a district and sessions court granted their pleas to have their conviction in the iddat case, also known as the un-Islamic nikah case, quashed. This was after months of ongoing legal troubles for the couple.
Extra Meetings Earlier today, Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka declared that a short order was reserved.
In February of this year, the PTI founder and Bushra were given seven years in prison and a fine of Rs 500,000 each by a trial court that declared their nikah to be phony in response to a court case brought by Bushra’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka.
The couple then contested their conviction and even filed a request for a variation with the IHC.
The court noted in the 28-page verdict that Maneka “remained passive for about six years” and that as a result, his right to Ruju had already expired. The court was responding to Maneka’s attorney’s claim that his client was deprived of the right of Ruju, which is the period of time to normalize the relationship within the duration of iddat after divorce.
The court stated: “They [Khan and Bushra] are directed to be released forthwith if not required to be detained din any other case,” emphasizing Maneka’s failure to prove his case against both of them.
