ISLAMABAD The government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has raised the base tariff for domestic consumers to up to Rs48.84 per unit, The News reported on Monday. This comes after the government decided to impose tax on agricultural income and increase the petroleum levy.
According to the Power Division’s announcement, Karachi residents will also be affected by the increase in energy prices; however, customers who use fewer than 200 units monthly and have been excluded from the increase for the previous three months will not be affected.
The federal government requested a raise in the base power pricing for domestic consumers of up to Rs7.12 per unit, which was granted by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) last week.
Regarding the federal government’s application to raise electricity rates for residential, commercial, general services, bulk, and agricultural consumers, the power regulator made a decision to approve it.
A copy of Nepra’s 52-page decision, which was sent to the federal government to carry out the power rate hikes, was obtained by Geo News. The federal government had suggested a standard tariff for K-Electric and other power distribution firms (Discos).
Prior to that, on July 5, Nepra approved a rise in the price of power for the month of May 2024 of Rs3.3287 per unit due to a monthly fuel costs adjustment (FCA); K-Electric customers were exempt from this increase.
The federal cabinet has also authorized raising the base rate for general services by Rs6.62 and for business consumers by Rs8.04 and Rs6.62 respectively.
