After making his debut in 1993, the rugby union star played 23 times for the renowned New Zealand team, including nine test matches.
They engaged in a heated pre-match altercation that culminated in them pushing one another.

Hewitt recalled the incident later, saying, “It felt like there were only the two of us on that field.

“It was a big game where we were going to battle, and the rules were, ‘Kill him or be killed.'” I compared it to that, therefore I guess it’s now a part of that legend.”

Following his rugby retirement, Hewitt was involved in the community.

Among those paying tribute was Mark Robinson, the rugby boss of New Zealand, who described Hewitt as “gracious” off the field but “uncompromising” on it.

Mr. Robinson stated: “He was a proud All Black and Maori All Black, a regular on the sidelines of club rugby, and passionate about the provincial game.” At this time, our thoughts are with Norm’s loved ones and family.”

Hewitt represented Hawke’s Bay and Southland at the provincial level, in addition to playing 66 games fothe Wellingtonr Super Rugby team Wellington.
