During the most recent fiscal year, 2023–2024, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) supplied the national grid system with around 34.436 billion clean and low-cost units from its numerous hydroelectric facilities.

22 hydel power plants owned by WAPDA produced 34.436 billion units of electricity in total in 2023–24, 3.266 billion more than in the previous fiscal year (2022–2023), according to official data.

13.424 billion units were produced by Tarbela Hydel Power Station, 4.672 billion by Tarbela 4th Extension, 6.556 billion by Ghazi Barotha, 5.276 billion by Mangla, and 762 million units were produced by Neelum-Jhelum Hydel Power Station. However, the remaining 3.747 billion units of energy came from additional WAPDA hydel power plants.

The national exchequer would have lost Rs. 143.7 billion if the same quantity of power had to be produced using imported furnace oil, but WAPDA’s rise in hydel output to the tune of 3.266 billion units helped avoid that fate.

The enhanced hydrology and efficient management and upkeep of WAPDA’s Hydel Power Stations allowed for the production of this extra hydel power.
