RAWALPINDI: Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman of Jamat-e-Islami (JI) has threatened to extend his party’s anti-inflation sit-in for a month if the government disregards the demands, which include a reduction in the cost of power.
Speaking to the participants at the sit-in at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi, the JI chief declared, “Our sit-in is not of two or three days but can last for a month.”
JI workers from all over the nation had gathered in Islamabad the day before to organize a sit-in; however, the party moved its sit-in to Rawalpindi after obtaining permission to hold a demonstration in the D-Chowk area of the federal capital.
The political-religious group has proposed ten demands, including a significant increase in electricity prices, in exchange for abandoning its sit-in protesting inflation. The JI emir declared that if the current government did not take the requests seriously, a sit-in will be held at the door of the parliament.
Speaking to the sit-in participants, JI Naib Emir Liaqat Baloch affirmed that the interior minister and other federal government figures had gotten in touch with the leadership to arrange a meeting.
According to Baloch, the JI emir demanded the workers’ immediate release and appreciated the government’s offer of discussion. The politician said, “We have prepared our demands with the help of experts.”
