Prior to his resignation in April, Edwards was the highest-paid newsreader at the news. On Wednesday, he entered a guilty plea to three charges of creating derogatory pictures of minors.
The news handling of the matter has come under scrutiny after it was revealed that the organization was aware of Edwards’ arrest in November yet kept him on staff until April.
The company declared that it would have taken “immediate action to dismiss him” if he had been charged while working for the news.
Days before the conviction, it was also disclosed that Edwards was paid between £475,000 and £479,999 in the fiscal year 2023–24, placing him as the third-highest paid broadcaster for the news.
Compared to the prior year, when Edwards was paid between £435,000 and £439,999, this represented a substantial rise.

Following Edwards’ guilty plea, the news said in a statement that it was “shocked to hear the details which have emerged in court” and that “such abhorrent behavior can never have a place.”
It stated that “no charges had been brought against Mr. Edwards and the BBC had also been made aware of significant risk to his health” at the time of his detention.
