The United States justifies its veto of the UN General Assembly’s resolution on a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

The UN General Assembly is meeting today to examine the situation in the Gaza Strip and the US use of its veto power in the Security Council. The UN is warning that Israel’s assault of central Gaza is seriously impeding the provision of much-needed humanitarian goods. A resolution on Gaza that called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire was vetoed by the US last month. Every time a veto is used in the Security Council, a general assembly meeting must be held to explain the reason behind the veto, as Al Jazeera’s diplomatic correspondent James Bays explains. Deputy ambassador Robert Wood, the US representative, justified the veto by accusing Hamas of instigating the conflict.
