The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has signed an agreement with Allianz, the German insurance company, to add its brand to one of the world’s most iconic rugby stadiums.
According to sources, the RFU and Allianz planned to speed through an announcement of the agreement after being contacted by the news on Monday afternoon.

The deal’s worth was unclear, but sources indicated it would significantly enhance the governing body’s finances.

The RFU purchased the block of land where the stadium now stands in 1907 at the request of committee member William Williams.

We have contacted both the RFU and Allianz for comment.

Saracens’ home ground was previously sponsored by Allianz. The insurer dissolved the agreement, while Saracens was kicked out for violating wage cap restrictions.

The naming rights contract will become one of the most prominent in Britain, rivaling the Emirates and Etihad stadiums, which are home to Arsenal and Manchester City, respectively.
