GUJRANWALA: After being detained in connection with the country’s deadly May 9 protests last year, Aliya Hamza, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has finally been freed from jail on bail. Her arrest took place more than a year ago.
The PTI leader was granted bail in the May 9 case by a district and sessions court on July 31, allowing her to be released from Gujranwala’s Central Jail.
The politician’s release orders were also granted earlier on Wednesday by a district and sessions judge in Gujranwala, following the submission of Rs50,000 in surety bonds in compliance with the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) directive.
The PTI leader cannot be arrested by law enforcement until August 29 according to a ruling earlier today by LHC Justice Ali Baqar Najafi.\
During the hearing of Aliya’s bail plea, which was filed by her husband, the high court also requested a report from the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) in order to stop her from being arrested in any more instances.
