On Tuesday, Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, revealed a comprehensive plan to revamp the country’s energy distribution system, blaming corruption and long-standing inefficiency for the sector’s problems.
The Prime Minister underlined the urgent need for reform during a recent meeting with the chairman and board members of various electrical distribution companies (DISCOs), claiming that the current system has “hollowed out the roots of Pakistan.”
The Prime Minister’s comments are a reaction to ongoing problems in the DISCOs, such as subpar performance that is linked to corruption and poor management. Sharif bemoaned the inadequacies of these organizations’ performance, emphasizing how ineffective they had been. He said, “Our performance regarding DISCOs has not been appreciable,” highlighting the critical need for structural adjustments.
