A US federal court said last week that the tech behemoth had violated antitrust laws by using billions of dollars to form an unlawful monopoly and take over as the default search engine worldwide.
The decision is viewed as the first significant victory for the government against the dominance of Big Tech.
According to reports quoting people familiar with the situation, the Department of Justice’s other options include requiring Alphabet’s Google to share data with rivals and putting in place safeguards to prevent it from obtaining an unfair edge in AI products.
AdWords, Google’s search advertising program, or the Chrome web browser can be separated from the Android operating system.
Antitrust authorities have filed lawsuits against Apple, Amazon, and Meta in the last four years due to their dominance of their respective markets.
In 2004, Microsoft reached a settlement with the Department of Justice regarding allegations that it coerced Windows users to use its Internet Explorer web browser.
Requests for comment from Google and the Department of Justice were not immediately answered.
