In their platform, the Liberal Democrats promised to lower the price of watching important football matches, claiming that at least ten Premier League games should be shown for free each season.
The party, which now has 72 members of parliament, wants to have the paywall lifted in order to capitalize on the Olympics’ success and encourage more people to participate in sports.
The Liberal Democrat MP for Bicester and Woodstock, Calum Miller, wrote to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy requesting a meeting with football industry executives to examine ideas for free broadcasting.
“This Premier League season has to be the final one to be restricted behind a paywall,” he wrote.
“With millions of ardent supporters and participants, football continues to be the most popular sport in the United Kingdom. It is ingrained in our nation’s culture and tradition.
“Maybe with your help, the Premier League and related TV companies will be convinced to give us all a live Premier League game for Christmas,” he continued.
