The 124-time World Cup winner played his final match for Germany last month when they were defeated by Spain in the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 competition.
The 38-year-old goalie for Bayern Munich made his debut for his country in 2009 and competed in eight major competitions.
In addition to being chosen captain prior to the 2018 World Cup, Neuer led Germany to victory over Argentina in the World Cup final in Brazil. Ilkay Gundogan took over as captain earlier this year.
Along with Gundogan’s statement this week, midfielder Toni Kroos also declared his retirement from international football following Germany’s home Euros.
Once he inks a new contract, Neuer will carry on with his club career.
