In India, women’s safety is becoming a major worry more and more. Gender-based violence incidences have significantly increased since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power, raising concerns about the future of women in the nation.
The country has been particularly shaken by one recent occurrence in West Bengal. As a form of political retaliation, BJP activists in Nandigram are said to have undressed a woman and made her walk 300 meters in her undies. The woman said that she and her family had been attacked by BJP members after recently defecting to the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Her residence was also destroyed by the assailants.
