According to Israel’s military, thousands of missile launchers belonging to an armed group supported by Iran were destroyed by jets early on Sunday morning. Three fighters have been slain, according to Hezbollah and its Amal allies.
Despite the loss of a top leader, Hezbollah claimed to have fired 320 rockets and drones against Israel in retaliation. The Israeli military reports that one Israeli navy soldier died.
After ten months of hostilities that have stoked concerns of an all-out war, the US claims it is attempting to prevent any additional escalation.
Since the day following the beginning of Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza on October 7, there have been nearly daily gunfire exchanges over the Israel-Lebanon border.
The most recent round of US-sponsored peace negotiations for Gaza ended in deadlock.
Prior to its departure, Hamas declared its disapproval of the latest Israeli demands and charged Israel with breaking its commitments. Israel disputes that its demands have changed since the previous round of negotiations in early July.
Iran also backs the Palestinian faction, which Hezbollah has stated it is supporting. Hezbollah and Hamas are both banned as terrorist groups by the UK, Israel, and other nations.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, over 560 deaths have been documented since October.
