In a media briefing, Federal Energy Minister Awais Leghari elucidated the mechanism governing electricity pricing in Pakistan, stressing that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) sets power tariffs.
Leghari clarified that the two main components on which NEPRA bases its energy pricing calculations are monthly fuel adjustment costs and quarterly tariff changes.
He pointed out that the public and media frequently misunderstand NEPRA’s rulings, and petitions are frequently filed to establish these rates.
“NEPRA’s decisions are frequently misinterpreted due to a lack of understanding within the media,” Leghari said.
He further stated that the most recent petition was heard by NEPRA on August 26 and that, as a result, electricity bills will increase by 96 paisas per unit from September to November. He clarified that this increase is a component of the NEPRA-approved quarterly adjustment.
