ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) approved the “Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024” on Friday, after the Senate gave its support. The bill proposes a three-year prison sentence for staging unlawful demonstrations in Islamabad.
Senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Danyal Chaudhary, sponsored a measure that seeks to control public gatherings in the federal capital and make sure they don’t disturb the peace.
Azam Nazeer Tarar, the minister of law and justice, stated during a floor speech in the lower house of parliament that the goal of the measure is to keep the calm during processions and public gatherings.
He downplayed the opposition’s worries, claiming that residents had experienced severe inconvenience as a result of the growing number of protests in the nation’s capital.
