Without it, division, turmoil, and violence on our campuses and in our country will persist. It’s simple to blame others and claim that they aren’t acting peacefully or politely, but the reality is that our actions are the first to affect others. How can we expect others to treat someone who has a different opinion with kindness if we ourselves are unwilling to do so?
It was crucial to me as president of Southeastern University that we instill in our students the value of polite conversation.
