According to BT Consumer Division CEO Marc Allera, the “key barrier” to installing 5G mobile phone signal is planning regulations.
The law, in his words, is “very arcane and really not favourable to rolling out digital infrastructure at the pace that the UK needs it
He told programme that the industry is trying hard to modify those regulations “that quite simply just make it very hard for us to roll out at the pace and scale that our customers want” by “having a very open dialogue” with the government and regulator.
He continued by noting home fiber broadband provision and 5G signal as examples of how these regulations impede the development of various forms of infrastructure.
Planning reform is now a top priority for the Labour government and a vital component of its strategy to expand the economy.
According to Mr. Allera, 15 UK cities will have 5G phone signals “to get us started,” with millions of people experiencing better connectivity “straight away.”
