Gregg Berhalter, who was fired in July after the USA lost the Copa America in the group stage, is replaced by the Argentine.
The news was made before to the US and New Zealand playing a 1-1 draw in an international friendly in Cincinnati.
The 52-year-old Pochettino claimed it was a chance “I couldn’t pass up”.
“The decision to join US Soccer wasn’t just about football for me; it’s about the journey that this team and this country are on,” he continued.
“What motivated me was the fervor, the drive, and the desire to accomplish something genuinely momentous here.
I see a bunch of players with a lot of promise and quality, and I think we can create something truly unique that the entire country will be proud of.
Matt Crocker, the sports director of US Soccer, oversaw the hunt for Berhalter’s replacement and was a Southampton player during Pochettino’s tenure at St Mary’s.
According to Crocker, Mauricio is a multi-time winner who has a strong desire for helping players grow and a track record of assembling competitive, cohesive teams.
