According to reports, Iran’s judiciary has launched a new lawsuit against two imprisoned female journalists for showing up to court without donning a headscarf.
The new complaint against Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi was launched on Monday, one day after they were granted bail and released from custody.
The two received sentences of thirteen and twelve years in prison, respectively, for their reporting on the 2022 death of Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Amini while in captivity.
After their release, pictures of the two journalists holding hands and grinning outside the jail went viral on social media.
“A new case has been filed against the defendants after footage of them without hijab was released online,” the judiciary’s Mizan news agency stated on Sunday, citing a video that was extensively circulated.
