Higher security is being implemented in the Indian-occupied area of Jammu and Kashmir as it gets ready for its first election in ten years. The elections, which are set for September 18, 25, and October 1, coincide with the region’s continuous hostilities.
Citing the necessity to guarantee a seamless election process, the government has sent out more paramilitary personnel. Nonetheless, this action has come under fire from some quarters, who claim it could scare voters and affect the result.
The central government’s decision in 2019 to remove Article 370, which had given Jammu and Kashmir special status, is being followed by the next election. Discussions concerning the region’s autonomy have been sparked by Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent declaration that this move is irreversible.
