Every day, obituaries, photos from funerals, and the names of people who lost their lives in Ukraine are shared on social media and in the media throughout Russia.
Along with names from other public sources like government reports, these names were compiled by the independent website Mediazona and Russian.
We confirmed that the information had come from the deceased’s family or law enforcement, and that they had received an official declaration of death from the war.
Recently laid graves in cemeteries have also revealed the names of soldiers killed in Ukraine; these are usually adorned with flags and wreaths that are delivered by the ministry of defense.
Although the true number of Russian servicemen killed in Ukraine is thought to be significantly higher, we have identified the names of 70,112 of them. Certain families choose not to disclose their loved ones’ deaths to the public, and our study excludes identities that we were unable to verify as well as militia fatalities in eastern Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Donetsk and Luhansk.
