Speaking outside of the UN General Assembly, the actress emphasized that, as a result of tighter limitations on women, even animals now have greater rights in Afghanistan.
A Taliban spokesman responded by saying that they “never compared them to cats” and “highly respected” women.
Following the introduction of a new set of “morality laws” by the Taliban regime last month, Streep made these remarks.
These regulations, among other things, prohibit women from speaking out in public and from staring straight at men to whom they are not married or related by blood.
The actions are the latest in a long list of limitations the administration has placed on Afghan women and girls since taking back control three years ago.
