With a seat across from a Russian envoy, the British prime minister charged that the country was engaging in “the greatest violation of the [UN] charter in a generation” during his speech to the UN Security Council in New York.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is illegal,” declared Sir Keir. Global security is at risk. And it has brought forth immense human pain.
“To put it frankly, six million people have been forced to evacuate, over 35,000 civilians have been murdered or maimed, and around 20,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly deported—essentially abducted.
“In this conflict, 60,000 Russian soldiers have also lost their lives or suffered injuries. And for what purpose?
Sir Keir reaffirmed his appeals for ceasefires in Sudan and in the crises involving Israel, Lebanon, Gaza, and Gaza. He stated that “political solutions that can break repeating cycles of violence” were required.
The world is looking to this council more than ever in this time of escalating conflict to provide leadership for peace, maintain our collective security, and shield the most vulnerable, he continued.
“The United Kingdom will always contribute fully to meeting that obligation.”
