A majority of Republicans supported the legislation, which passed 341 to 82 with 132 House GOP lawmakers voting in favor of it. This was a success for Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. There were 82 Republican “no” votes.
The House of Representatives passed a short-term extension of the current fiscal year’s federal funding levels on Wednesday in order to keep the government operating through December 20. The House was faced with an October 1 deadline and no progress on fiscal year 2025 spending goals from both parties.
Widespread bipartisan support was shown for the continuing resolution (CR), albeit predictably more Democrats than Republicans voted in favor of it.
It was certain that a sizable portion of Republicans would vote against extending those measures since they were still upset with House GOP leaders for approving the government funding bills in two sizable halves last year rather than making the Democratic-controlled Senate debate each of the 12 appropriations bills separately.
The struggle over federal funding, particularly in the 118th Congress, has increased political drama. The impasse over government funding last year paved the way for a group of House Republicans to remove Johnson’s predecessor.
