A year after a DNA profile was found in connection with the case, the breakthrough was revealed on Thursday, the 41st anniversary of the horrific murder in Aberdeen.
On September 29, 1983, a man armed with a cheese wire attacked Mr. Murdoch, also referred to as Dod, while he was in his taxi.

The 58-year-old never made it to Culter, despite having assured his control room he was going there.

After turning into Pitfodels Station Road on the outskirts of the city at approximately 8:45 p.m., he was attacked.

For the murder, no one has ever been taken into custody.

Police Scotland provided an update on Thursday, stating that the DNA profile found in 2023 has been improved upon to enable the force to look up any possible family DNA—that is, the DNA of the suspected murderer—in the National DNA Database.

The force, working with the National Crime Agency (NCA), has generated an initial list of 200 possible genetic matches to the profile.

Officers will now make contact with these individuals in an effort to determine any familial ties.
