A family representative, Ebie McFarland, stated that the singer-songwriter passed away quietly on Saturday at his Maui, Hawaii, home.
The artist experienced memory loss since he was in his 70s, however no official cause of death was stated.
Born in Brownsville, Texas, Kristofferson began performing professionally in the middle of the 1960s.
Even though he was a vocalist, several of his songs—such as Ray Price’s US number one hit For the Good Times and Janis Joplin’s 1971 single Me And Bobby McGee—were best known when performed by others.
He formed the country supergroup The in the middle of the 1980s with Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson.
During a 2009 awards event, former bandmate Nelson claimed of Kristofferson, “there is no better songwriter alive.”
Nelson stated that whatever he writes is a standard, and that’s something that we will all have to put up with.
In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and received a Grammy Award for his popular song “Help Me Make It Through the Night.”
