The Houthis of Yemen are rebranded as “global terrorists” by the US.

According to US officials, the designation may be withdrawn after 30 days if the Houthis stop their attacks.

The Houthi rebels in Yemen have once again been classified as a “terrorist” organization by the US government.

Following US strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in retaliation for the rebels’ attacks on ships in the Red Sea, Washington relisted the group as “specially designated global terrorists.”

The Houthis claim that until Israel ends its war on Gaza, their operations will target ships that are connected to Israel.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement on Wednesday that “the United States announced the designation of Ansarallah, also known as the Houthis, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in response to these continuing threats and attacks.”

“This designation is a crucial tool to further restrict the Houthis’ access to financial markets, obstruct terrorist funding to them, and hold them accountable for their actions.”

US officials stated that the designation will not be effective for 30 days.

“The United States will immediately reevaluate this designation if the Houthis cease their attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” Sullivan declared.

Following the announcement, Mohammed Abdulsalam, a spokesman for the Houthi group, stated that the designation would not have any bearing on the group’s efforts to stop Israeli ships or ships bound for Israel from passing through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the Arabian Sea, or the Red Sea.

He told Al Jazeera that the Houthis would “not back down in its position in support of the Palestinian people.”
