Bold and blunt, Kenya’s “truth speaker” is about to get fired.

Rigathi Gachagua, Kenya's beleaguered deputy president, describes himself as the “truthful man” and credits his extraordinary ascent to his ability to speak truth to power.

However, he claims that these issues are also a product of his outspoken personality as he faces impeachment procedures.

Little was known about the man who would become Kenya’s second-in-command in just five years before he was elected as an MP in 2017.

Few outside of Gachagua’s constituency in central Kenya were familiar with him or his political philosophy.

Prior to the 2022 elections, Gachagua gained notoriety for his strident opposition to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s nominee for the position of chosen successor.

Kenyatta was heavily endorsing Raila Odinga, the former prime minister.

However, Gachagua sided with William Ruto, Kenyatta’s deputy at the time, who was vying for the presidency that his boss did not want to pass down to him.

How the president of Kenya and his deputy have a falling out
Gachagua attacked Kenyatta at political gatherings and in the media, frequently using language that other politicians would find abhorrent.

“Don’t kill me the way your father killed JM Kariuki,” he stated at a July 2022 rally, alluding to the 1975 death of an MP while serving as the first president of the country and Uhuru Kenyatta’s father.

Nobody has been proven guilty of Kariuki’s death as of yet.

Before Gachagua was appointed deputy president of Kenya, police conducted a raid on his house and took him into custody for it.
