On social media, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Vincent Kompany, and Allyson Felix all hailed the 58-year-old for his kindness and humanitarian activities shortly after it was announced that he had passed away from brain cancer on Monday.
Mutombo’s “unshakeable commitment to helping people everywhere” was praised by US President Clinton (1993–2001), and Bayern Munich coach Kompany called him a “legend of the Democratic Republic of Congo” who has “inspired and given hope to an entire generation of young Congolese people all over the world.”
The tributes captured the essence of how National Basketball Association (NBA) legend Dwyane Mutombo, while staying true to his African roots and spending his time helping others, embraced the luxury and opportunity of his new home in the USA during the course of an 18-year playing career.
“Every person has a purpose,” Mutombo declared in 2019.
“I’ve always been compassionate toward enhancing the lives of people everywhere.
